Age of the Primes Star Convoy

Age of the Primes Star Convoy in truck mode, a red futuristic truck hauling a grey trailer with a blue stripe down the side. There are visible guns on the top AOTP Star Convoy in truck mode, side profile to show off how long the trailer is compared to the truck part. It is VERY long and instead of wheels, the trailer has a set of rear treads AOTP Star Convoy in truck mode, photo of the rear of the trailer, with a trailer door opened into a ramp with Micromaster Hot Rod driving out of the inside of the trailer Micromaster Hot Rod in vehicle mode, a red futuristic (well futuristic for 1986) sports car with yellow flames on the hood, an exposed engine block, large side pipes, and a large yellow spoiler Hot Rod in robot mode, a very simple design. Predominantly red, his flame hood has become his chest and - while mostly off image - the rear of the vehicle has formed his legs (parts of the spoiler are visible in the image) Hot Rod manning the turret on the Micro Trailer in battle platform mode The Micro Trailer! Literally a small all-black truck and trailer with a dark blue windscreen and a red stripe and Autobot chevron on the trailer The Micro Trialer, side profile view. Also Star Convoy in vehicle mode is visible in the background because of the distance, the Micro Trailer looks like it's not too much smaller than Star Convoy but trust me - it's called a MICRO Trailer for a reason. The Micro Trailer, with its rear door opened and forming a ramp with Hot Rod driving out of it - see what I said about it being the MICRO Trailer? AOTP Star Convoy in base mode, in the official configuration (per the instructions). His upper body is pretty much fully in robot mode, albeit with the head facing down, he is wielding his gun in one hand and sword in the other hand, Hot Rod is manning a turret on a platform to his left (the viewer's right) and the Micro Trailer in battle platform mode is placed in front of the right section (viewer's left) AOTP Star Convoy in base mode, in my own preferred configuration. Differences from the 'official' config are that his robot mode chest is opened to form an additional platform, his head antenna are spread out, his right arm (viewer's left) is transformed into the vehicle mode configuration and facing forward, his left arm (viewer's right) is also transformed into its vehicle mode configuration but rotated back and angled so it's hidden behind him (with his shoulder cannon on that arm angled so the cannons are facing forward in the new configuration), the Micro Trailer battle platform is resting in one of the platforms instead of just in front of it, and his gun is plugged into a port on his rightmost (viewer's leftmost) side AOTP Star Convoy in my preferred base mode config, but loaded with blast effect pieces AOTP Star Convoy in robot mode, photograph mostly of his upper half. He is very red, with a very stylized and fake truck front on his chest. Both of his shoulders have guns on top of them and the same Autobot chevron like the Micro Trailer. His head is a more anime-styled version of his original head sculpt as Optimus Prime. He is posed with his upper body turned and one arm held back, said arm also is wielding his gun. His other arm is mostly out of shot. AOTP Star Convoy in robot mode, posed as if he is taking a step forward. We can now see that his thighs are silver and his legs are predominantly blue and yellow, with the sides of the trailer as the sides. He is wielding his gun and a blast effect is inserted into the barrel to give off the illusion of being fired AOTP Star Convoy in robot mode, standing static with his gun held. Photo is angled up to look imposing, like you know this guy is going to be the hero to save the day. AOTP Star Convoy in robot mode, wielding his sword. Which has a blue blade that is OBVIOUSLY not just a blast effect (it is one) AOTP Star Convoy in robot mode, close up shot of his robot mode head to show off the details. As said previously, it is very much a more anime-styled G1 Optimus Prime head with larger side antenna and an additional silver crest with a yellow detail in the center of it.

Okay first off - yes I know that officially this toy is called Star Optimus Prime, but look: he was called Star Convoy when Takara introduced him during Return of Convoy back in 1991 and he was only given an English market name when Hasbro announced this figure at the end of 2024, he's been Star Convoy for 35 years now, I'm calling him Star Convoy.

Anyways, this figure is probably the most controversial out of all of 2025's Age of the Primes offerings. Star Convoy here was the 2025 Titan figure but was also significantly smaller than previous Titans. He is only 15 inches tall (for reference - 2024's Titan, Tidal Wave, was 19 inches), although this did come with a price reduction with an MSRP of US$150 vs US$200. But still, a decent number of fans still felt that Star Convoy is not worth the asking price.

Me, personally? I got him on discount at Target for around $120 and, you know what, I'm viewing him through the price I paid for him and I fuckin' love this figure. Honestly, bring on the smaller Titans.

Look, I love BlackZarak but he is also incredibly unwieldy to mess with, he's not a toy I can just casually mindlessly play with. Star Convoy, on the other hand, is. Sure, he's not strictly a desk fiddle bot I have but he isn't so big that it's bothersome to mess with him.

Beyond that, AOTP Star Convoy is pretty much a near 1:1 recreation of the original 1991 Star Convoy - just bigger and with more articulation. Seriously, just take a gander at the original toy, even the differences like how the AOTP has a lot of silver where the original toy had white is because the deco is taken from the 2005 reissue. And just like the original, he comes with a Micro Trailer (complete with the same amount of connection ports like the original Micro Trailers did - despite this being the only modern one) and a Micromaster version of Hot Rod. Only things it really lacks from the original toy are the ability to launch Hot Rod out of the Micro Trailer and the motorized functions allowing Star Convoy to move forward and back on its own in either robot or vehicle mode.

Oh and I guess Star Convoy doesn't fit visually with the other members of the Thirteen what with the whole 'pretty much just being the 1991 design' thing but I really don't care about the Thirteen as a concept, so I don't care about that whatsoever personally. I'm just a weeb who loves Japanese G1 and this toy looked hella cool and I got him on a good discount and I fully enjoy what I got here. He's awesome.
